Hampstead was settled in 1640 and originally was part of Massachusetts until 1739. Known as Timberlane Parish, it was renamed and incorporated in 1749. While the rural community borders on Big Island Pond, buyers looking for less expensive waterfront real estate find Angle Pond and Wash Pond (Sunset Lake) more attractive.
